Reyes began his career as a billiards assistant in his youth at a family-owned billiard hall. He developed an interest in many cue sports during that time. The game was then taught to him. He was too short to reach the height of the table at the time. He began practicing pool on coca-cola bottles.

In the 1960s, he started to play ‘three-cushion’ billiards. He was a winner of many small tournaments and gambling matches by the 1970s. Promoters saw his potential and decided to place him in major tournaments after he had won several competitions. Reyes was soon selected to be part of ‘Team Philippines’ at the 1978 RP Japan Pocket Billiards Tournament.

Efren’s first major break came in 1983 when he beat Pepito Dancing with a score of 39-32 at the Philippine Professional Pocket Billiards Championships. He moved to the United States shortly thereafter to pursue his hustle and gain international recognition. Reyes was a top player in the Philippines during the 1990s, having won several major tournaments in America, Europe and in his home country.

After defeating Nick Varner in 1994, Reyes became the first non-American winner of the US Open Nine Ball Championship. After some time he was selected to play Earl Strickland at the 1996 ‘Colour of Money” match, Reyes created a lot of media attention. Reyes won the match with a score 120-117, and he also took home a $100,000 pool prize. After the WPA World Nineball Championship began broadcasting on television in 1999, Reyes became the first pool player to win it.

In 2001, he won the $170K price money. It was also the largest winning prize of that time. In 2002, he defeated Mika Immonen to win the ICC “International Challenge of Champions”. He also won $50K. Reyes was then crowned the WPA World Eight Ball Champion and became the first pool player to win the title in both of these disciplines.

Mr.Reyes was born in 1954, in the Philippines’ Pampanga region. Reyes moved to Manila with his entire family at the age of five. He was passionate about the game of pool as a child.
